I work a seasonal job at an outdoor picnic area. One day while I was there, it started pouring outside. My coworkers were so frustrated by this, but to calm my anxieties about the weather I decided to put my hand outside the picnic area covering, and then stepped outside for a second and felt the rain on me. I imagined each raindrop as a fairy caught between the sky and the earth. Eventually, she would hit the ground and evaporate back up to her own realm, and the cycle would begin again. The water cycle is such a beautiful thing in nature, and I feel it can be used to represent many things, such as the concept of reincarnation or simply the idea that life gets better--that positive energy goes in cycles and even if you're feeling like you're on the "bottom", you can still make your way back up. These thoughts about rain were what inspired me to create my piece The Water Fairy based on my interpretation of the raindrops that fell upon me that day at my job. As well as the artwork, it also inspired some song lyrics:
Sometimes I stare at puffy clouds and think of how they're intertwined
Droplets of water, not alone, and that is when I realize
That rain, it falls, it falls till it all just hits the ground and then
Crawls to lakes, ponds, puddles and bays
But water's all the same
If this has inspired you to check out The Water Fairy, it is still available to see at the TRAC Gallery until mid October. The address for this is 53 Main Street, Toms River, NJ.
